Message from the President Dear all,
My
favourite coffee shop, Harvest Specialty Coffee in Wongala Crescent, has
closed since the last e-news. This closure is all part of the emptying
of the premises to permit demolition and rebuilding on the site in
Wongala Crescent between Chicken & Fishhead and Blue Illusion.
The
photograph is a gathering of long standing regulars on the last day.
Residents of a number of locations around Sydney are concerned at some
of the comments of the State government about permitting multi-storey
apartment blocks irrespective of heritage concerns. Heritage is a key
factor in Beecroft and Cheltenham due to our heritage conservation
areas. Hornsby Shire Council has indicated that there are areas suitable
for multi-storey apartment blocks around Hornsby City Centre that do
not affect heritage considerations and are close to a transport
interchange. While it is very important that housing availability is
improved in Sydney, it is also important that this is done in a way that
enhances liveability, permits diversity of housing stock, preserves the
natural environment and links with our past. Some of which goes
back thousands of years and in other places to the early 1900s or even
more recently.
Information about these State government proposals is available CLICK HERE.
This coming Saturday, I am going to the launch of a book about
China-Australia links. My interest in this subject arose from reading
another recently published book about Chinese furniture makers in Surry
Hills around 1900. That latter book includes references to the business
where the father of L J Hooker who grew up in Beecroft worked while he
lived in Sydney. CLICK HERE
The History Group’s Christmas quiz proved popular over January and congratulations to all who participated.
The History Group has now started work on a new book about women of
Beecroft and Cheltenham. They are having difficulty locating photographs
of the following: Delia Cadden, Winifred Caddy, Alice Dobbie, Kate
Green, Marjorie Rouse and Joyce Vickery. Can anyone help? If so, please
contact me at president@bchg2119.com.au.
This week I will be meeting with the ‘Friends of Ahimsa’ in discussion with the National Trust about plans for Ahimsa.
Hornsby Shire Council has completed further checks on the trees in
Malton Road and tree felling is now in progress. Council's latest
advice can be read CLICK HERE
I have also met with Epping Civic Trust to talk about matters of joint
interest and hope to do the same shortly with Pennant Hills Civic Trust. Roderick Best PSM

trust has been granted permission to publish a collection of
photographs from the 50s and 60s. We will be publishing all of
these in our eNews over the coming months. Here are more.

Ed, the Beecroft Barber, Owner of Salon d’ Ritz.
Ed and Lina Ed
is a fine example of multiculturalism. He has a French mother and
a Palestinian father. Ed was born in Jerusalem and is now a proud
Australian. He migrated to Australia in 1988 and was followed by
his parents some years later.
Ed has always worked locally. He started as an apprentice
hairdresser in 1990 at the “John of Rome” salon in West Pennant
Hills. He then moved to Beecroft in 2001 and worked for a while in
the current salon.
Ed took a short break from Beecroft to work in a salon he part owned in
Castle Towers before returning and purchasing the current business in
Beecroft. He reported that he really enjoys the Beecroft area and
has been working in the district now for over 35 years.
Ed is outgoing and very friendly. Give him a wave when next you pass his salon.
